Dead Point Magazine Reports:
Jimmy Webb: The South Will Rise AgainJimmy Webb took a break from southern sandstone to road trip out West, crushing every hard test-piece in his path.
Unless you are slow on the uptake, you know who James “Jimmy” Webb is. This prodigal son of the South has been tearing up everything the West has to offer. His first stop out west was the eastside of the Sierras where he dispatched The Buttermilker V13, Form Destroyer V12, and Kill Onsight V11. After that he made a quick trip to Joe’s Valley and finally made his way to Colorado.
His first week in the area Jimmy showed no signs of slowing as he grabbed the third ascent of Suspension of Disbelief V13 (which involves a committing dyno at the top), Don’t Get to Greedy V13, Top Notch V13, and Nuthin But Sunshine V13. Then with bruised skin and split tips he continued his feverish rampage by repeating the RMNP Jade (see the video HERE).
Ever since Jade’s first ascent, this problem has been the topic of much debate. Originally the grade of V15 was suggested after the FA by Daniel Woods, but since then there has been a shift, maybe because it’s on everyone’s radar, or possibly because it “ain’t” that hard. With a slew of ascents now posted to various 8a.nu scorecards, this problem’s grade has been in question.
Days before Webb’s ascent Carlo Traversi managed to send the rig and then downgrade it to V14. He provided a viral explanation of his downgrade in a video of the ascent (watch it HERE), which stirred the pot of every climbing forum on the internet. The problem revolves around on a single hard move to a painful crimp followed by easier climbing to the top. Carlo stated that during the send the move felt “like V10,” and he was able to float right through it, even though it is a crimp line, (a type of climbing he has stated is his weakness).
Even before Carlo’s subsequent downgrade, Ty Landman (who nabbed the second ascent) called the line “soft”. Putting the debate to rest, Jimmy stated that Jade is solid V14. If the weather holds, we may get to see more from Webb. What’s next, The Game?
